Beavers dominate LA Southwest, 98-57
Tough defense and efficient shooting give Women's basketball another one. Now 6-1, Trade Tech looks for berth into the state Top 10.
LOS ANGELES, CA – Los Angeles Trade Tech College Women's Basketball put down a 98-57 thumping over Los Angeles Southwest College at home, lead by Cheyenne McKinnie's 31-point performance on Wednesday.
With a huge second half lead Tech showed no mercy as it continued to pour down the three-point ball.
McKinnie started 3 of 3 from downtown, finished 5 of 8 from behind the arch, and overall shot an efficient 52 percent (13 of 15).
The stellar Lady Beaver defense was led by the tough and aggressive play of Kamara Smith, who was two steals (8) short of a rare double-double, consisting of double-digit points and double-digit steals. Smith capped off the evening with 12 pts, five rebounds, three assist and a block.
Purple & Gold head coach Sherwyn Morgan has all his players focused, from starters to the last player on the bench, all are expected to perform at full speed despite the score.
Bench play was outstanding and driven by Deejanae Poland's brilliant shooting. She went 7 of 12 (58 percent), crashed the boards with 7 REB, recorded 4 AST, and defensively contributed, 3 STL and 2 BLK.
This victory might help the Lady Beavers in state rankings.
Currently, according to the California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA), Trade Tech opened the season ranked No. 11 in Southern California and based on the CCCAA rating percentage index (RPI), Tech sits just outside of the top 10 in the state at No. 11.
Massey Ratings, a popular and reputable ranking website has the Beavers at No. 13, but it's strength of schedule could have a factor in keeping Tech out of the the top 10, with a schedule that ranks 35th.
With an overall 6-1 record in the season, Tech will now face Saddleback College in the 6th Annual Chaffey College Panther Pride Tournament on Friday at 1 p.m. If the Beavers advance it will take on the winner of the Mount San Jacinto College v. Skyline College. Either way Tech will play three consecutive days, Dec. 1-3 at Chaffey.
